PC maker Lenovo has issued a statement that it's releasing a tool to help customers remove the adware Superfish pre-installed in many Lenovo laptops since the middle of 2014.

Superfish posed a significant threat since it exposes the user's computer to hacking and other forms of digital attack.

According to Lenovo, the tool should be able to uninstall the adware and remove the certificates it issued from the browsers. The removal tool can be downloaded here

Lenovo also said it's working closely with Windows giant Microsoft and anti-virus company McAfee to help in the removal of the Superfish, as well as the quarantine of its related certificates.

In order to free a Lenovo computer from the adware, users should make sure Superfish has been completely uninstalled and that all accompanying certificates have been revoked. Filippo Valsorda has created a test page to determine if a computer has been loaded with the Superfish software.

An article in PC World also gave users another way to find out if their computer has Superfish.  The article mentioned the adware functions by inserting ads. Users would likely encounter it when they're using "Visual Search Results" and if they see the words, "powered by Visual Discovery" then the computer is likely carrying Superfish.

Users must then go to the computer's Control Panel, go to Programs then select Uninstall a Program and search for Visual Discovery. If you find it, uninstall it.

Scan your computer for viruses immediately afterwards. A large number of anti-virus companies now consider Superfish as adware, which means most anti-virus programs will seek to remove it from your computer.

Lenovo added it has stopped preloading Superfish in their computers since the beginning of January.
