Iraq's defense chief has criticized the US for revealing details of a planned offensive against the ISIS in a bid to retake Mosul.

Iraq's Defense Minister Khaled Al-Obeidi criticized the US official who outlined the timeframe of the attack, saying he had no direct knowledge of the plans.

"This is urban warfare and we have civilian populations. It is very important to take time and accuracy in setting the plan for this battle," Obeidi said in a news conference.

Last weekend, a US official revealed that plans were in place for the 25,000-strong Iraqi army to launch an assault against the Islamic State in an attempt to regain control over Mosul.

The official added that the attack may happen in April or May, in what they call the biggest assault yet against the ISIS.

Obeidi said it is inappropriate for military commanders to discuss in public plans of that magnitude.  He also clarified the timeframe of such an assault is Iraq's decision and not that of the US.

"A military official should not reveal the timing of an offensive," he added. "The battle for Mosul starts when preparations are complete, and selecting the time is up to Iraqi military commanders."

Details the US senior defense official had disclosed include the number of rifles and ammunitions being sent by the US to Iraq and the intense training that Iraqi troops and rebel fighters are undergoing, leading up to the planned assault.

These information Obeidi said triggered concerns because too much details have been given away to the enemies, enough for them to prepare.

The Pentagon assures none of the information revealed could be useful for the ISIS in its operations.

Some defense analysts say disclosure of such details could sometimes serve as an operational tactic intended to affect the enemy even before the assault begins.
