Trial of Maine Man Accused in Facebook Murder Set to Start

The murder trial of A 21-year-old Maine man, who was charged with killing a teenage girl he met through Facebook, is set to begin, with the trial expected to last two weeks.

Kyle Dube, a resident of Orono, is the main suspect in the killing of 15-year-old Nichole Cable in what police said a botched attempt to look like he was rescuing her from a kidnapping.

Dube set up a fake Facebook profile in May 2013 and set up a meeting with Cable, a Glenburn teen.

The fake Facebook profile was under the name of another young man but was later traced back to Dube's home. The man in the profile had no involvement in the case.

Police said Dube ended up killing the victim in the process of a kidnapping investigators say he intended to solve himself.

Police have said Dube told other people he planned to abduct Nichole while wearing a ski mask, return later without the mask, find her and appear to be a hero.

"He thought he could make himself a hero," a police investigator said.

Nichole died as a result of asphyxiation, the state's chief medical examiner said. Her body decomposing body was found in Old Town eight days after the abduction.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors declined to comment on the case until Monday's opening statements.

The defense team wanted to name Dube's former girlfriend as an alternative suspect, considering that the girl disliked the victim because she thought Dube and her were seeing each other.

The court, however, refused to name another possible suspect.

Nichole's classmates at Old Town High School had earlier pledged to cut or end their use of social media following the death of the 15-year-old student.
