Two Passenger Planes Nearly Collide in Barcelona Airport

Two large commercial passenger aircraft almost collided Saturday at Barcelona's El Prat Airport , in an incident that could have resulted into a major catastrophe, if it were a less alert pilot flying one of the planes.

The heart-stopping incident was recorded on video by aircraft enthusiast Miguel Angel Ramirez, based in Barcelona, who described the experience as one of the worst he had ever witnessed.

The video had now received more than 8 million views since it was uploaded on YouTube Satuday.

In the video, a Boeing 767-300 owned by Russian airline UTAir on a flight from Moscow was coming in to land on Runway 02, when another passenger plane, an Airbus A340, came out from a taxiway into the same runway, at a right angle with the path of the Russian aircraft.

It was apparent from the video that the Russian plane was ready to touch down, its landing gear deployed, but then had to pull up to avoid colliding with the plane on the ground.

There was a noticeable shift in the plane's downward direction apparent in the video, which showed it pulled up and retracted the landing gear.

The airbus is owned by Aerolineas Argentineas, Argentina's national carrier.

In the video, there was no indication that the Airbus A340 attempted to stop crossing into the runway.

The Russian aircraft re-circled once and landed safely on the same runway 15 minutes later .

The Spanish airport authority AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea or Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) initially refused to acknowledge the planes were in any danger, releasing a statement that there was sufficient space for a safe landing between the two planes. Later, the agency said it had referred the incident to an independent commission investigating air accidents and civil aviation incidents in Spain.

Aviation experts from all over have commented about the video, some of them saying there could have been some kind of a miscommunication between the control tower and any of the pilots in the two aircraft.
