Interfaith Marriages: A Way of Ending Islamophobia

A former Supreme Court Judge claimed that interfaith relationships-especially those between Christians and Muslims should be encouraged to end the worldwide issue on Islamophobia.

Islamophobia is commonly explained as a "prejudice against, hatred towards or fear of Muslims or other ethnic groups perceived to be Muslim," which have been dubbed by some scholars as a type of criticism.

Widely used and known by the media, the term purportedly came from the word 'islamophobie' which was first used in the 1918 biography of Islam's prophet Muhammad written by painter Alphonse Etienne Dinet and Algerian Sliman ben Ibrahim. However, in the English version of the book made by Robin Richardson, the word was translated as "feelings inimical to Islam," and not "Islamophobia."

Joining the Lords as a crossbencher, Lord Scott stood his ground in a debate on ways to develop relations between the Muslim community and other religious groups in the United Kingdom, setting his own family as an example on how interfaith families can flourish enough to end 'Islamophia.'

In his argument, he specifically cited that among his four children, a son and a daughter of his are happily married to a Muslim and have been blessed with seven Muslim children.

"The family relationships since those events took place have been as happily familial, as close and as good as any parent or grandparent could wish," he said adding that encouraging interfaith matrimonies may be an effective way of promoting progress in Muslim relations with other religious sects.

Meanwhile, Baroness Warsi responded in behalf of the government stating that it is necessary that people are allowed to marry a person of their choice, regardless of his or her religious beliefs .

She added, "I'm incredibly proud that the Government has done so much work on the issue of forced marriages, including criminalizing a practice which should have been criminalized a long time ago."
