Mark McGrath is Alive and Well, Shoots Down Online Death Hoax

To make it clear, Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray's frontman, is not dead despite an Internet hoax going around that the singer has been shot to death.

The singer took to Twitter to clarify the rumor. "Final word on the death hoax thing," he tweeted on Thursday after he heard the news that he had been killed in a very dramatic manner on the set of his show "Hot Package." He apologized to his fans for the confusion and said "I knew nothing about it and found out the same time you did."

In the early hours of Thursday, creative consultancy company, Prismatics sent out a press release claiming that Sugar Ray's vocalist had been killed by a gunman, which immediately sparked the alarming rumor. It claimed that Mark had been shot several times and died in his co-host Derrick Beckles' arms. The release even requested flowers from fans and asked them to post Sugar Ray selfies while "holding a packet of sugar over their heart."

However, the announcement of his death simply turned out to be a hoax. Mark proved that he was a good sport when he retweeted one follower's post, which said, "That's cool you aren't dead and stuff. But I had you in my celebrity death pool and now I am out 8 bucks, bastard!"

Adult Swim, the cable network that will broadcast Mark's show completely denied any involvement in the online death hoax. In a statement, they explained that they didn't send out the press release and isn't a part of a publicity stunt or any marketing promotions for their new show hosted by Mark.

However, after shocking Mark's fans, Prismatics issued a new statement, which acknowledged that the hoax is indeed for promotion. The statement repeated the same press release, but clarified that it it will only happen on the show.

Hot Package is set to premiere on Friday at midnight.
