The sight of Eva Mendes sporting a baby bump and the thought of Ryan Gosling becoming a father both threw fans into a state of euphoria you'd think they're the ones expecting.

So why all that excitement?

Well, it's a first for 40-year-old, independent Eva, who once said she was not into marriage nor motherhood.

Now a friend of Eva's describes the pregnancy to People.com as a dream-come-true for the "Hitch" actress after she hit it off with "The Notebook" actor, adding that she's been ready for motherhood for a while now.

Ryan, 33, who had purportedly adopted a child according to a Father's Day hoax, has turned out to have actually fathered a child after all.

They've been together for nearly three years in a rather private way, as far as privacy in celebrity land allows.  The latter served to ramp up the anticipation, the way all things private and secret usually do.

A report by OK magazine on Wednesday said Eva is seven months on the way - a surprise to some who felt out-scooped by not having detected the bulging tummy early on.  

But a quick math and date tracking would explain that away: she hasn't been photographed in public since March, which is almost four months back, when she might have been three months on, and a baby bump normally becomes glaring somewhere on the 4th or 5th month.

She had also refused to go through an airport scanner in February, citing x-ray radiation as something she always tries to avoid.

This may have fueled the pregnancy rumors, Eva explained in the Ellen deGeneres show when asked if she was about to be a mother.

In May, the couple opted to skip the Cannes Film Festival, this time fueling speculation that they may be headed for a split.

And then boom, an admission by the two that a baby is indeed on the way -- just the kind of stuff that is great fodder for the imagination of fans.
