Christopher Plummer Didn’t Want to Go to the Oscars Because It Was a Tribute to Julie Andrews

Christopher Plummer didn't want to share the spotlight with Julie Andrews because the night was not about him or his character from The Sound of Music, Captain Von Trapp. Thus the reason why Maria's (played by Julie Andrews) dream man was nowhere to be seen at the 50th anniversary tribute to 1965's Best Picture Musical.

Christopher told People that not only could he not attend the Oscars because of personal reasons but also because he did not want to. "It was really a tribute to Julie. It's her movie," he then went on to share a famous phrase in England, which he thought described him best if he attended and that is "a spare prick at the wedding." He added that the phrase, which basically refers to a person who is out of place, would have been the most accurate description of how he would have been seen.

The 85-year old actor expressed his support, however, by watching the show and said that he was extremely impressed by Lady Gaga's take on the title track.

Christopher, who took home his first Best Supporting Actor Oscar Award for his role in Beginners in 2012, praised Gaga for knowing how to perform both the old and new styles and for staying true to the song and the story. "Julie looked terrific," he claimed, before saying that he was thrilled about the tribute to Julie.

Quizzed about who he would like to sing if the Awards show decide to feature "Edelweiss," he thought about it for a bit and simply admitted that he's not that familiar with the rock scene. "I'm an old jazz fan," he said.

Christopher and Julie Andrews will next be seen together in the TCM Classic Film Festival. Their movie The Sound of Music will kick off the festival, which starts on March 26.
