Chile Won't Grant Valentina's Request For Euthanasia

Chile President Michele Bachelet did not grant the request of 14-year old Valentina Maureira to end her life through euthanasia.

Valentina, who is suffering from cystic fibrosis, recorded a video of herself requesting a shot that will make her sleep forever.

"I asked to speak urgently with the president, because I am tired of living with this disease," said Valentina in her YouTube video.

In response to Valentina's request, Bachelet visited her at the Catholic university hospital in Santiago, and talked with her and her father for more than an hour.

Presidential Spokesperson Alvaro Elizalde, however, said the government could not grant Valentina's request for euthanasi but it would shoulder the payments for her psychiatric treatment.

Elizalde stressed that euthanasia is not allowed under the laws of Chile.

"It is impossible not to be overcome by emotion with the girl's request. It's impossible to grant her wish," said Elizalde as she also expressed her sympathy for Valentina's condition.

Valentina's YouTube video

Valentina's YouTube video became viral on social network sites as it sparked anew a debate on euthanasia.

In the video, Valentina mentioned that her older brother died of the same illness and was aware that she would meetthe same fate.

Valentina said she felt increasingly hopeless about finding a treatment for her illness and that it has adversely affected her quality of life.

Valentina's father, Fredy, supported his daughter's request.

"This is so tough but I have to respect her decision because she is the one who is suffering this illness," Fredy said, adding that he cried upon learning of his daughter's wish to die.

Cystic fibrosis is an incurable genetic disease that damages multiple organs. It primarily targets the lungs, damaging its tissues and making it difficult for the patient to breathe.
