'Huawei Watch' Tries to Be More Than Just 40 Pretty Faces

Huawei's become the latest tech company to try to disguise an Android Wear-powered smartwatch like a classical, analog round-face timepiece. And judging from the reviews, they're done a pretty good job at it.

Huawei debuted its first smartwatch March 1 and announced it will hit retail shelves mid-2015, perhaps in June. The "Huawei Watch" has a 42 mm circular face, a stainless-steel housing and 40 watch faces to choose, most of which have that nostalgic analog look.

It supports the standard features of Google's watch operating system. It checks email and takes phone call alerts, for example.

The stainless-steel housing is stronger and more scratch-resistant than aluminum models. The watch's Amoled screen is circular with maximum width of 400 x 400 pixels and a resolution of 286 pixels per inch.

It's also got "ergonomic button placement" for easy operation and a durable sapphire crystal face. There's a selection of interchangeable straps in different widths for men and women.

Huawei's smartwatch also has a six-axis accelerometer and a heart rate monitor. A barometer counts steps and calculates calories burned during exercise.

Richard Yu, chief executive of Huawei's consumer product group, insists people prefer the traditional classical watch, but today, smartwatches are not traditional

"We see that wearable devices extend the human senses, extend the human body and extend our human intelligence," Yu said.

Now, let's see if Huawei Watch can stand up to the Apple Watch expected to debut March 9.
