National Guard Soldier Kills 2 in Utah

Jared Tolman

(Photo : U.S. Air Force photo/Tech Sgt. Anika K. Jones) Is this the shooter? A Pfc. Jared Tolman of the 197th Special Troops Company (Airborne), Utah Army National Guard, waits to board for a night static line airborne operation at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Oct. 14, 2011. The jump is a quarterly requirement for airborne-qualified soldiers. In Utah Monday, a Jared Tolman identified as a Utah Guardsman shot and killed two acquaintances, and then shot himself using an assault rifle.

It is now apparent that jealousy drove a 23-year-old Utah National Guardsman to barge into the home of a university student, an ex-girldfriend,  in Logan City early Monday, and shoot her and another man dead with an assault rifle.

The man then drove to another apartment looking for a third man he believed was involved with his ex, but not finding the man there, the soldier shot himself.

The man was later identified as Jared Tolman, assigned to a support battalion of the 19th Special Forces Unit, Utah National Guard.

Police said Tolman left a suicide note in his home before driving to the apartment of Mackenzie Madden, 19, a sociology major at Utah State University shortly after midnight.

In the note, Jared said he was sorry or what he was about which he said was selfish.

The shooting happened just a block away from the university in Logan City.

Investigators said Tolman sent a series of unanswered text messages to Madden, before he kicked down the door to the girl’s apartment and shot her multiple times with the assault rifle.

He also shot Johnathon Jacob Sadler, 25, who he found with Madden inside the unit.

Tolman also knew Sadler, but it was not clear whether he knew Sadler was in the apartment at that time.

Authorities could not say for sure how Tolman and Madden or Sadler were related, and Tolman family members would not say anything about the incident.

Friends of Madden told police that Tolman and the girl had a serious relationship, but they didn't know whether the relationship was still on.

After shooting Madden and Sadler, Tolman reportedly went to another apartment, where he shot himself with the same assault weapon after residents told him the man he was looking for wasn’t there.

Tolman graduated from Utah State University in May with a degree in political science, and signed up with the Utah National Guard in 2009.

Utah Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Steven Fairbourn said Tolman was assigned to a support battalion for the 19th Special Forces Unit, where his chief duty was handling laundry.

But an official Defense Department photo (above) identified a certain PFC Jared Tolman as having undergone airborne training in 2011 with the 197th Special Troops Company.

Logan police could not confirm where the assault rifle Tolman in the shootings came from, but said it was not a government-issued weapon.

Relatives of Mackenzie Madden said she was registered for classes this fall and was set to graduate in December.
