Chris Johnson, running back for the National Football League's (NFL) New York Jets, was shot in Orlando early Sunday morning.
Johnson was in a vehicle with another passenger and a driver identified as Reggie Johnson and Dreekius Oricko Johnson, respectively.

While they were stopped at a traffic light, their assailants pulled up beside them and shot at the vehicle Johnson was in.

Johnson and the other passenger were shot in the shoulder, while the driver was killed by the hail of bullets.

The survivors of the hit and run were rushed to the hospital immediately, where they were declared in stable conditions.

A source close to the NFL player confirmed that Chris Johnson was indeed involved in the shooting incident.

The source spoke to the Associated Press under a veil of anonymity, saying that they did not have the right to speak for Johnson.

The Sheriff's deputies said that no arrests have been made and that an investigation is currently on-going on possibly uncovering the identities of the shooters.

''Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and everyone impacted by this tragic event,'' the Jets said in a statement.

The injury brings doubt into Johnson's playing career. While he is projected to be well enough to play before the seasons begins, Johnson will turn 30 in September and his contract is due to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.

Johnson and the Jets reached a two-year agreement worth US $8 million last April. However, he had his worst season statistically as he only ran for 663 yards, catching only 24 passes for 151 yards.

The yards gained were his first under 1000, while the received passes were his career low statistic.

Last February 14, the Jets cut ties with Johnson, declining to exercise their contract option on him. This allowed him to re-sign with other teams.
