A two-year-old girl was among the four people killed when an SUV crashed head-on with a sedan in Northern Maine Monday morning, the Maine state police said.

The girl, identified as Alana Nelson, was onboard the sedan driven by her mother Bobbi-Jo Johnston, 33, from Fort Fairfield when the accident occurred. Also onboard the sedan was the girl's grandmother, Laurie Ann JOhnston of Carlingford, New Brunswick.

The girl's mother and grandmother were also killed in the accident.

The police said SUV driver Kimberly Lausier, 38, from Madawaska, tried to pass a tractor-trailer on Route 161 in an area known as Rainbow Cove in Township 16-Range, but hit the oncoming sedan boarded by the two-year-old girl head-on.

Lausier was also killed in the crash, the police confirmed. One survivor, identified as Richard Lausier, was taken to the hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

The police have not established the relationship of the survivor and the SUV driver yet.

The police were trying to reach out to the driver of the tractor-trailer, which the SUV driver tried to overtake.  Witnesses said the tractor-trailer did not stop even after the SUV and the sedan have collided.

The police said it was likely that the driver did not know the crash occurred and went on with his trip.

One witness said motorists immediately ran towards the SUV and the sedan to rescue the victims, including the two-year-old girl but all four of them were killed on the spot.

Firefighters and rescue personnel were seen scrambling into the area just minutes after the crash.

Route 161 was closed for almost seven hours after the crash.
