Tim Burton, famous for his quirky and dark take on films, is set to direct the live-action of Disney's Dumbo-a story about an elephant who is ridiculed for having big ears, which actually give him the ability to fly.

The studio has recently been making live-action versions of the well-loved animated classics, and in this latest move, Disney has reached out to the "Big Eyes" director to take on the beloved animated film, which premiered on October 23, 1941.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Ehren Kruger, who wrote the Transformers series, as well as the horror flick "The Ring" wrote the script. The movie, although it is live-action, will incorporate CGI to bring the baby elephant with the iconic ears to life. In addition, THR reported that there will be an additional family story that will parallel Dumbo's journey. Justin Springer, who produced Oblivion and Tron: Legacy, will be producing alongside Kruger.

The latest among Disney's live-action movies, Cinderella, which stars Lily James and Cate Blanchett, is set to premiere on March 13. Fortunately for the studio, their live-action versions of the classic tales have earned great success. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland earned US$1.025 billion, while Maleficent which featured Angelina Jolie grossed US$758.4 million.

Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" is still showing in select theaters, while his take on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is scheduled to be released on March 4, 2016.
