Chip Kelly's Recent Actions Show His Inexperience In Eagles GM Post

The actions of Chip Kelly, coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and their top personnel man, indicate that he is out of his depth and is drowning in the new responsibilities he has.

Few jobs can prepare a person for becoming an executive for a NFL team. A college coaching gig, held by Kelly previously, could not give one the experience needed to run a team on a grand level.

His actions for the past few weeks speak little to counter these arguments. He has just recently traded quarterback Nick Foles for Sam Bradford, running back LeSean McCoy for linebacker Kiko Alonso, and got rid of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

NFL National Lead Writer Mike Tanier believes that these actions, and the fact that his name has been involved in every big name trade, suggests that Kelly is impatient with planning his moves.

Tanier likens Kelly to an inexperienced swimmer who is thrashing around the pool, trying to get somewhere, only to make things worse.

An experienced general manager would not have traded Foles for Bradford.

For starters, Bradford is more expensive. He has also not had a good a playing year as Foles had in 2013. He has had two ACL tears in the same left knee in the last two years, as well as a slew of other injuries.

Kelly's confusion also shines through in his trading efforts with running back Frank Gore.

The fact that Gore is older than the player he was to replace - McCoy - and that he came off a statistically inferior season did not bother Kelly much. In the end though, Gore just wasn't sold on joining with the Eagles, even after making his plans known.

Now in negotiations with the Indianapolis Colts, Gore could have been using Kelly and the Eagles to drive up offers from other teams.

Thus, all of the moves Kelly has orchestrated recently have made the team worse.

All the Eagles have to show for it are a quarterback with seven starts and three wins in two season for US $13 million in cap space; an unexperienced running back to lead a running offense; a former linebacker coming off an ACL tear; assorted draft picks among other things.

It should not be said though that Kelly is stupid and he does not know how to look at good players.

It is just that his inexperience in his new general manager role has had him scrambling to put everything together in the mad rush of free agency.
