U.S.-based e-commerce giant Amazon.com, Inc. is taking a further step towards the Internet of Things (IoT) with its latest acquisition of IoT cloud platform developer firm, 2lemetry.

2lemetry was co-founded by its chief executive officer Kyle Roche and chief technology officer Chris Chiappone in 2011.

According to 2lemetry's official website, the company is the only provider to specialize in a software-based approach with an open enablement platform.

The firm hasn't disclosed the financial terms of the deal, although it will remain operationally independent of Amazon.

"As you may have heard, Amazon has acquired 2lemetry. Our existing service has not changed, and with Amazon we will offer our same customer support. We still have the same name and branding as before," said 2lemetry.

2lemetry provides support for customers from many industries including oil and gas, transportation, mining, manufacturing, industrial machines and HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning).

"2lemetry dramatically reduces the complexity and ramp-up time for implementing IoT solutions. And its unique platform gives your IoT system new capabilities with unmatched speed and scale." 2lemetry says on its website.

The acquisition by the e-commerce giant comes after the IoT firm raised US$4 million funds from Salesforce Ventures along with other investors.

Amazon also acquired another company this year, Israeli chipmaker firm Annapurna Labs, for its remote computing services Amazon Web Services, Inc.

According to a report, Amazon may plan to integrate 2lemetry's platform with its Amazon Web Services.

Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu platform, also announced last month its partnership with the e-commerce firm along with Microsoft Corporation for the IoT.
