Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the National Football League (NFL), has been out since October. Judging by his performances during the offseason scouts posit that the layoff may be a permanent one.

Despite being released by his two teams last year, Sam has admirably stated that he would still want to continue his dream of playing in the NFL.

Even though he continually chases his dream, the performance he showed during the NFL's first-ever Veteran's Combine at the Arizona Cardinals' practice facility last Sunday may have revealed the truth about Sam.

And that truth is that he just may not be good enough to keep playing in the NFL.

One of the scouts who was present at the Combine stated that Sam's performance was a bad one.

He is listed at 6-foot-2 and 265 pound. However, those statistics may be a bit stretched considering he looks smaller than the other defensive linemen who showed up.

The height difference could have been forgiven though. The one thing that couldn't be was his flailing performance.

At the 40-yard dash, Sam was timed at 5.07 seconds, a time that is three tenths of a second too slow.

When Sam was still a pro the previous year, he clocked in at 4.79. While reporters asked how one year affected his speed, Sam simply shrugged off the question.

During the position drills, the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year at Missouri in 2013 was nowhere to be seen as Sam moved slow and had no bursts of energy to release on the field.

While some people may view this article and think that Sam's sexual orientation has a hand in it, Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco spoke to a handful of scouts on the matter.

The majority outcry ignored his sexual preference and insisted that it was about him as a poor performer.

Sam though is not disheartened and continues to work hard to fulfill his dream of returning to the NFL.
