Russia Sends Nuclear Threat to Denmark

(Photo : Reuters) Russian sponsored cyberattackers have apparently been exploiting U.S. government vulnerabilities.

Russia has just recently sent a nuclear threat aimed at Danish warships if Denmark were to join a NATO's missile shield defense system. Last August, Denmark stated that they would provide radar capabilities to some of the warships on the missile shield.

The threat serves as a warning from Russia to Denmark. These were some of the most heated comments directed at a member of the military alliance.

The NATO program that Russia does not want Denmark joining is the missile shield defense system.

The program is described as one that is designed to protect its members from missile launches from countries like Iran.

The ambassador of Russia to Denmark wrote an opinion piece that stated the Nordic country has not fully understood the consequences of joining the program.

"If it happens, then Danish warships will be targets for Russia's nuclear weapons. Denmark will be part of the threat to Russia," Mikhail Vanin wrote in Jyllands-Posten.

The other reason for Russia not wanting Denmark to join is that the system may reduce the efficacy of their own nuclear capabilities. If that happens, a fight similar to that encountered in the Cold War could happen once more.

In a response to the comments of Vanin, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said that Denmark was a member of the alliance and will be protected from any threat.

She states that they have made clear that NATO's missile shield is not directed at any country, even Russia. On the contrary, the program is meant to defend against missile attacks from any country.

Russia and the West have experienced increased tensions due to the imposition of economic sanctions on Russia over a pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine.

Since then, NATO has noted an increased activity in Russia's army and navy forces in the Nordic region.

According to Jyllands-Posten, while there are no missiles that will be placed in Denmark soil under the NATO program, they could be placed in Greenland which is still a part of the kingdom.
