Sea Lion Chokes Great White Shark

We all know the feeling of being choked by a big chunk of meat or something else we eat. Even if it is very unpleasant, the issue often can be solved with a few good knocks in the bag.

However, this was not the case for a great white shark that washed up at the Australian Coronation Beach, 430 kilometers north of Perth. What it had taken for a fulfilling meal of the day became instead its last.

A local citizen, Brad Tapper, was at the beach together with his children and other locals, when they spotted something trashing around 50 meters from the sand line.

Actually it was a dog walker who first became aware of the shark.

"We became aware that there was something unusual going on out there, because the dog wouldn't go into the water. First we thought it was a diver, but when it got closer, we could see that it was a great white shark struggling in the shallow water", Tapper told local media according to AFP.

The unfortunate shark fought its way closer and closer to the beach, and even if some onlookers tried to drag it back into the sea, it kept on moving closer to the sand.

Finally it got stuck on land where it died.

The Western Australia Department of Fisheries examined the dead shark, but could find no visible signs of injury or disease, but what they found, was a sea lion lodged in its throat.

Afterwards scientist Rory McAuley from the department made a statement: "It's possible, that the shark was trying to dislodge the blockage. This could explain its unusual behavior", he said.

According to the scientist such a large object as a sea lion may have damaged the shark's internal organs or impeded water flow into his gills, and would eventually cause its death.

Brad Tapper filmed the shark as it struggled in shallow waters and posted the clip on YouTube.

It was kind of surreal, you're watching it and you don't realize how rare it is at the time, until you get home and have a look at the footage," he told the West Australian newspaper.
