After casting problems with the lead role, Lifetime moved to cast Alexandra Shipp as the late R&B singer Aaliyah on "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B."

Wendy Williams, the executive producer of the film, tweeted her excitement over the upcoming movie on Friday.

"I'm excited to exec produce the Aaliyah @lifetimetv movie w/ @DebraMChase. Prod starts later this month and @AlexShipppp will play Aaliyah," she said.

Alexandra Shipp also couldn't contain her happiness as she tweeted last week, "It's like God keeps making life better, I swear. thank you universe!!! #amazingnewstocome."

She had acted on a number of memorable roles such as House of Annubis, Awkward and Ray Donovan.

Shipp will be taking over the role from Zendaya Coleman, who had received a lot of hate for dropping out of the film.

Coleman then broke her silence and released a video on her Instagram stating that she dropped out because the production value was not there.

"The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me I couldn't do it," she explained.

"I wasn't talented enough or I wasn't black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that," she continued.

She also explained that there were copyright issues on the music which weren't being handled well.

Coleman said she tried to reach out to Aaliya's family by writing them a letter but wasn't able to get to them.

On the other hand, Aaliyah's family also had issues regarding the production. They told Daily News last month that they think Aaliyah's biopic deserved a bigger production.

Jomo Hankerson, Aaliyah's cousin, explained that they wanted a major studio release along the lines of Tina Turner's biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It".

"This needs A-list actors, A-list talent that can breathe life into what we think is a phenomenal story," he explained.

The film will resume production this summer and is scheduled to premiere this fall on Lifetime.
