Residents Flee Washington Towns Due to Wildfire

Wildfire

Raging wildfires destroyed more than 100 homes in north-central Washington state through Friday, forcing hundreds of residents to flee.

Sheriff Frank Rogers said they evacuated the entire town of Malott, Okanogan County, while residents in the outlying areas of Brewster were told to leave their homes.

Rogers said there were no injuries reported and that the threat on Brewster had eased. Local officials have yet to determine the actual amount of damage to property brought about by the Carlton Complex wildfires that affected a stretch of 260 miles and continued to grow.

"Fifty fires were burning in Washington, which has been wracked by hot, dry weather, and gusting winds and lightning," Gov. Jay Inslee stated in an interview with the New York Post.

Inslee said military firefighters have been called to help contain the wildfires. The governors of Washington state and Oregon have both declared a state of emergency.

"One hundred National Guard troops were on standby, and up to 1,000 more in Yakima could receive additional fire training," said Karina Shagren in the interview.

According to Sheriff Rogers, initial estimates show that the fires destroyed 30 houses and trailer homes in Pateros, 30 in a community outside the town of Alta Lake, and 25 other homes elsewhere, affecting some 40,000 people.
