Microsoft No Longer Interested in Android

Stephen Elop, an executive of Microsoft, has made it official now that the company has no intentions of staying in the Android business. This Thursday, he emailed a memo to all Microsoft employees in which he mentioned that in lieu of working towards those areas which have more value, the company has decided to let Nokia X smartphones, which came with a customized version of Android suited for Microsoft, migrate to Windows Phone.

Nokia X series was Microsoft's attempt to compete against existing smartphones companies such as Samsung and Lenovo which offered smartphones based on Android platform. However, later on the company decided that they have better chances of grown at the cheaper end of the smartphone market. And they want the customers to buy these phones from them which run on Windows OS instead.

Microsoft also announced recently that it will cut about 18,000 jobs in the next year, which will make its biggest layoff of all time. About 66 percent of the cuts will come from the Nokia business, which the company acquired in April. However, Elop is in favor of this decision, and believes that the company is doing the right thing.

In the memo Elop asserted that change is necessary, and it will help company grow. From the memo it is also clear that he believes that mobile is quite important to the company, as he mentioned in other areas like Surface and Xbox, "there will be limited change".

Clearly, the company has big plans, and while it would be quite difficult for it to switch back to the Windows Phone OS, the efforts for the same would be worth watching.
