Nintendo, the world's biggest video game company by revenue, last week announced a new-generation console with the code name NX is at initial working stage.

This despite the announcement the company will partner with Japan-based mobile-portal and e-commerce website provider DeNA to develop game apps that are fresh and based on existing Nintendo characters for mobile devices.

Nintendo took the video game industry aback with the new NX console since this makes Nintendo look like a company not yet ready to fully transition from hardware to software.

New details about NX were delivered by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who said the company may change directions with its subsequent project, codenamed NX. He said the existing hardware outlook is quite gloomy, KDS reported.

Iwata said Nintendo wants to surprise players and bring change to the "video gaming life" with the launch of the next-gen console. Before the announcement of the NX, speculation was rife Nintendo may finally retire from hardware and settle on software.

Nintendo, however, surprised the gaming industry with the March 17 announcement of the new-generation console.

IBT reported some analysts agreed the description of the NX as a cohesive platform and not just a console could suggest a device that draws the line between a mobile and dedicated gaming console.

Australia-based retailer EB Games has already started accepting pre-orders for the new-generation console. More concrete information about the console is expected to be revealed in 2016.
