China Doles Out Controversial Maps To Military

China is reportedly distributing millions of maps to its military, the latest upgrade in 30 years, according China-based media outlet PLA Daily.

The maps are currently being handed out to all of its major military units, including the Lanzhou Military Command and six other People's Liberation Army ground task forces.

Although China's military maps are classified information, the controversial maps reportedly detail updated boundaries in the Arunachal Pradesh - a region also claimed by India - as well as maritime territories and islands in the East and South China Sea, which are also being contested by its South East Asian neighbors.

The inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh in the new map has not overly concerned India since it claimed certainty over its absolute sovereignty in the area.

"The fact that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India has been conveyed to Chinese authority at several occasions including at the very highest level," said Syed Akbaruddin, spokesman for India's External Affairs Ministry last June.

According to Lanzhou Military Command survey information center director Wang Xiaoming, the maps were prepared based on geocentric coordinates - which locates objects along a three dimensional system - and geomorphology.

Wang added that this method is commonly used by other countries' military forces.

Preparations for military training are underway to cope with the new territorial delineations, NDTV has learned.

Lanzhou air defense brigade commander Wang Huasheng said that the new maps would help troops improve strike accuracy and reduce operation planning time.

The new maps were created by the geographic survey services under the direction of the PLA's General Staff Headquarters.

Last Monday, China's President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to maintain peace while it resolved to settle its border dispute.

With China's distribution of the new map claiming the disputed Arunachal Pradesh as its own, it is unclear how relations between the two Asian super powers will develop.
