Mark Selby Beats Gary Wilson in China Open for Second Ranked Title of the Season

The finals of the Snooker China Open recently ended, with Englishman Mark Selby overcoming fellow countryman Gary Wilson for his world title defense.

The 31-year old Selby made a break of 145 in the seventh frame, winning 10-2 in Beijing.

He faced former taxi driver Wilson who - ranked at number 56 - shocked the world by beating the defending champion Ding Junhui 6-5 in the semi-final match last Saturday.

In an interview with World Snooker, Selby said that he thought he had played relatively well for majority of the match.

"To be 8-1 up at the end of the first session probably wasn't a fair reflection on how the match had gone, as a few frames could have gone either way but I managed to pinch them," Selby said.

He also adds that he will be returning home tomorrow, take a few days to rest, and get back on the practice table for the upcoming tournament.

Last Sunday, Selby moved to 3-0. Wilson put all his effort into the game though, slowing Selby's progress with a break of 91.

Selby was not deterred though and looked eager to prove that he was number one in the world by making the highest break of the tournament at 145. The feat took him to 6-1 clear. A 136 clearance made it 9-1.

While Wilson had never gone past the quarter finals of a ranking event, he was consoled with his break of 101 that got him on the board for a second time.

However, it was only a matter of time for Selby to win the game with seven frames. He earned his second ranking title of the season.

With the China Open done, Snooker players begin to prepare for the World Championship that begins on April 18 in Sheffield.

Selby hopes to have history repeat itself as last year, he beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in the finals.
