Alleged Kidnapper Shoots To Death Guard At U.S. Census Bureau

Police arrested on Thursday night a man who shot to death the guard at the U.S. Census Bureau office in Suitland, Maryland. The suspect, an alleged kidnapper, led police on a wild chase through Washington D.C. streets before he was caught.

His victim is Lawrence Buckner who sustained a gunshot on his upper body at about 6 p.m. He died less than two hours later at the Prince George's Hospital Center, reports Huffington Post. A cop was also hurt during the chase of the suspect.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Muriel Bowser disclosed at a briefing that the suspect, who was armed, abducted a woman in the 1200 block of Third Street NE. He drove with the victim to the Census Bureau and shot Buckner when he approached their green Honda as he saw the two fighting.

After shooting the guard, he fled and fired at a D.C. police cruiser on Bruce Place SE, which led police to chase the vehicle. The suspect fired again at the pursuing police cars in the 1200 block of Third Street NE.

Police said the entire event ran for at least two hours and covered more than 15 miles. About 15 police cars pursued the suspect along the bars and restaurant row. Authorities had to close traffic in the area during the pursuit.

It also disrupted the dining of some restaurant patrons such as Roberta Shapiro and her husband and friends who were at Cusbah near where the suspect was arrested. They were eating tandoori chicken and had to duck under the tables and lie on the floor when they heard gunshots after the police car rammed the suspect's vehicle, reports Washington Post.

As the suspect was approaching the H Street commercial corridor, the police hit his car. The suspect jumped out of his car and opened fire, while the cops fired back and hit him.

Lanier said the woman was able to get out of the car between the Census Bureau office and H Street. She was in good condition.

FBI spokeswoman Amy Thoreson said it was not a terrorism-linked incident but a domestic spat.
