Rammasun, the strongest typhoon to hit the southern China region, caused flooding in some parts of Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, affecting over eight million residents.

Hainan government said the typhoon, which landed in the province Friday last week, resulted in economic losses of over US$1.7 billion (10.8 billion yuan).

Ramassun, with winds packing up to 130 miles per hour, also affected the prices of basic commodities, from vegetables prices rising by around 30 percent to meat prices increasing by two folds, Xinhua reported.

The China Southern Power Grid has started mobilizing emergency repair teams to fix damage energy infrastructure and has distributed power supply equipment to temporarily power up hospitals, water plants, and other vital areas.

At least 400 family emergency kits will be distributed to affected areas in Haikou on Tuesday as part of over 2,500 family emergency kits and 5,000 jackets that will be handed out to residents of affected areas.

The volunteer groups will also give tents, rice and bedding.

Moreover, at least US$2 billion (12.7 billion yuan) of economic losses were recorded in Guangdong Province, the highest economic damage among the affected areas. But Guangdong recorded no fatality.

Officials of Guangxi have asked the government for financial and technical support to fishermen, whose livelihood have been heavily affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, Rammasun also brought heavy rains in Vietnam over the weekend, triggering flash floods and landslides, with at least 18 people killed, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Rammasun first hit the Philippines last week, with strong winds that uprooted trees and brought down thousands of houses.

Philippines government figures showed at least 97 people were killed during the onslaught of the said typhoon.
