Gwyneth Paltrow Takes On Challenge of $29 A Week Worth Of Food

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow will be living on a $29 food budget for a week to help raise awareness on hunger and poverty.

The challenge came as a surprise to some, since the last product Paltrow endorsed was a Monique Lhuiller jacket that was priced at $2,295.

Paltrow took the challenge as part of #FoodBankNYCChallenge, which was orchestrated by celebrity chef Mario Batali who had worked with the organization for almost seven years.

Paltrow posted a picture of her groceries worth $29 on her Twitter last April 9. The groceries were a combination of fresh vegetables, brown rice, tortillas, avocado and black beans.

She stood by her choice to eat healthy despite the available variety of yet cheaper options but would have otherwise compromised her 'green' lifestyle.

"This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store. What families on SNAP have to live for a week" tweeted Paltrow.

Many reacted to Paltrow's choice of grocery, thinking it did not provide the daily requirement of carbohydrates.  Some emphasized that people living on SNAP will require a higher amount of carbohydrates in order to sustain them for the day, according to Daily Mail.

The food on Paltrow's twitter post amounts to 7,059 calories, divided into seven days of the challenge, which then translates to 1,000 calories per day, far below the recommended daily calorie intake.

Gwyneth's decision stemmed from the fact that she considered herself to be "incredibly close to the common woman", according to a previous interview with CNN Money.
