Falcon 9 is Good to Go into Space Again and Again

A video of Falcon 9's first stage fly back and landing on July 14 released by SpaceX confirms the spacecraft's impressive capabilities.

The test focused on the reusability of systems in Falcon 9's first stage, which later "soft landed" in the Atlantic Ocean.

The rocket named after the Star Wars' Millenium Falcon is the first launch vehicle completely designed in the 21st century.

SpaceX said the test confirmed good news about the Falcon 9's capabilities. It said the vehicle's booster was able to consistently re-enter from space at hypersonic velocity.

The vehicle restarted its main engines twice, deployed its landing legs and touched down at near zero velocity.

SpaceX also said it has obtained all the necessary data to achieve a successful landing in the future.

The company is very confident of the Falcon 9's ability to land successfully on a floating launch pad or back at its launch site.

"However, our next couple launches are for very high velocity geostationary satellite missions, which don't allow enough residual propellant for landing," SpaceX said.

"In the longer term, missions like that will fly on Falcon Heavy, but until then Falcon 9 will need to fly in expendable mode.".

Falcon 9 will have another flight that is scheduled no earlier than September 12.

Falcon 9 is a family of launch vehicles designed and manufactured by SpaceX. The family consists of the Falcon 9 v1.0, Falcon 9 v1.1 and the Falcon 9-R.

The current Falcon 9 can lift payloads of 13,150 kilograms (28,990 lbs.) to low Earth orbit and 4,850 kilograms (10,690 lbs.) to geostationary transfer orbit.

There's a video showing the first-stage re-entry burn followed by a landing burn before the booster's landing legs deploy just before splashdown. The booster then tips over horizontally, as expected.

Much of the video footage, however, is partially obscured by ice forming on the onboard camera's housing.
