Kermit the Frog Look-Alike Discovered in Costa Rica

Kermit the Frog Look-Alike

(Photo : Brian Kubicki) A new species of frog called the Hyalinobatrachium dianae has been found in Costa Rica.

It appears a certain frog species is taking its looks from the famous Muppet, Kermit the Frog.

Brian Kubicki, the founder of the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, described a new species of frog, Hyalinobatrachium dianae. It looks uncannily like Kermit the Frog because of with its uniformly bright lime green skin and big white bug eyes with dark centers.

The newly discovered amphibian belongs to the 149 known glass frog species, 14 of which are found in Costa Rica. Glass frogs are named due to their translucent skin.

Their underbellies are see-through, making it possible to view the blurry outlines of their internal organs. Genetic testing confirmed its originality.

A group of scientists of the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center discovered the new frog species, colloquially referred to as Diane's bare-hearted glass frog, in February in the Talamanca Mountains.

Researchers were also able to differentiate the new species from its relatives because of its unique call.

"The advertisement call that the males of this species produce are very unique, no other known species of frog has a similar call, and this was indeed one of the traits that we used for the justification of it being a completely new species," said Kubicki.

The frog is named for lead author Brian Kubicki's mother Janet Diane Kubicki, as well as the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon and childbirth, Diana, who is strongly associated with wild animals and woodlands.

Researchers Brian Kubicki, Stanley Salazar and Robert Puschendorf published their findings in the science journal Zootaxa.
