Following the discovery by a 9-year-old girl and her dog of the chopped pieces of a baby in their backyard at the 1500 block of West 104th Street, deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department alerted residents to also check their garbage bins and yard.

Authorities are hoping to complete the puzzle of the dismembered baby since what Brittany Placencia saw was only a leg and a head. She and her dog were playing ball on Saturday afternoon when she saw her dog smelling the ball, reports News 9.

It turned out it was not the ball that the pet was sniffing but an infant's leg. Placencia informed her mother about the body part, who initially mistook it for a chicken leg, according to ABC 7.

The two eventually discovered the decapitated head of the infant, which appears to be only a few days old, beside their fence, the report relayed.

Ryan Rouzan, a deputy at the Sheriff's office, estimated the infant is about 1 to 3 days old, according to Newsla.com.

In response to the deputies' request, many residents checked their trash cans ad yard but did not find any body parts. They also said that they did not observe any expectant woman in their community the past few days.

The cops are still investigating the matter. The LASD asked residents who may have further information to contact detectives Adan Torres or Francis Hardiman of the department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous callers could instead call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
