Maui rescuers found on Wednesday morning a 65-year-old woman with injuries on her torso, indicating she was the victim of a shark attack.

The unresponsive woman was taken from the water of a popular surfing destination, the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, located south of Big Beach at Makena State Park. No one apparently witnessed the attack, which prompted the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources to close the water to swimmers.

Fire department crew cleared the waters of surfers, snorkelers and swimmers.

The closure order, which covers from the reserve to Makena State Park to the north, will remain close until Friday noon. It includes the surf spot called "The Dumps."

Snorkelers found the victim face down about 200 yards from the shore. She is a resident of Kihei and was snorkeling with two friends. However, they separated and she was alone when the snorkelers found her, reports NBC.

Efforts by medics to revive the woman were not successful, reports the Independent.

It is the third shark attack in Hawaii for 2015, but in the first two incidents, the victims did not die, said the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The Wednesday incident is the fourth fatal shark attack in Hawaii waters since 1995.

The first three occurred off the coast of Maui. The last victim in December 2013 was Patrick Brinley, a fisherman who was killed by an unknown shark species while kayaking off Makena Coast.

Before him, German tourist Jana Lutterpop died of a shark bite on her arm while snorkeling in Makena in August 2013. In 2004, a surfer was also attacked by a shark off the Maui Coast.
