Rescue team members in Nepal were able to pull out alive a 101-year-old man from the rubble on Saturday, just after authorities gave up hope on finding more survivors from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the place last week.

A team consisting of police officers and soldiers from Nepal found Funchu Tamang, the Hindustan Times reported. The centenarian is now staying at a hospital near Kathmandu and is recuperating from the minor injuries he sustained from the collapse of house, according to a local police officer quoted by Sky News.

"He was brought to the district hospital in a helicopter. His condition is stable," said Arun Kumar Singh said. "He has injuries on his left ankle and hand. His family is with him."

The old man got caught under the veranda of his home when the earthquake struck Nepal, according to Nuwakot police deputy superintendent Arun Poudel. They were lucky that they found Tamang alive, he added.

Tamang reportedly was able to survive the ordeal by eating flour and drinking water which he found inside containers scattered near his location, Fox News detailed.

"Those who should have survived lost their lives and someone like me who is near death has found a new life," Tamang said.

The centenarian was still in his 20s when an earthquake of about the same magnitude hit Nepal in 1934. At the time, the 8.0-magnitude quake took the lives of around 10,600 individuals.

Tamang recalls how he was sleeping inside his house when the earthquake struck. Fortunately, no one from his village died back then. But he laments how this recent earthquake in Nepal took the lives of so many people.

In Tamang's village, Khimtang, 27 people were confirmed dead, the report stated. Over the weekend, the rescuers were able to find three other survivors in the rubble.

The April 25 earthquake in Nepal has reportedly killed more than 7,000 people and rendered hundreds of thousands of residents homeless. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as rescue teams from 20 nations continue to search the place for more victims.

Nepal Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said the rescue teams still have not reached a lot of remote villages that were also heavily hit by the earthquake. The aftershocks are still ongoing and they expect to see a higher number of casualties in the coming days, he added.
