Swimming Pigs in China

Pigs will never fly, but in some provinces in China, pigs are already starting to high dive, and the tourists love it.

China is responsible for more than half of the world's swine production, and according to reports by Sinosphere, the Chinese populace does it primarily not as a means of entertainment, but to make the pigs grow healthier.

There are also reports that an amusement park dedicated to pigs is located in Zhejiang Province, which features pigs jumping from towering heights higher than regular-sized Olympic platforms used for diving.

Aquatic pigs are not endemic in China since most of the pigs they use are ordinary pigs for consumption. However, at a secluded island in the Bahamas named Big Major Cay, pigs roam freely and even lounge around its beaches, as reported by Forbes. Even though these pigs are not locally bred, somehow they are washed ashore, and they eventually call the uninhbited island their home, with some of the pigs even going as far as being friendly to tourists.

Unfortunately, not all pigs are treated the same way as they are treated in Bahamas. In Hunan province, pigs are shoved off a high platform into a lake while tourists look on. In Changsha, the pigs are painted with numbers, and according to Daily Mail, they are usually aided by a coach and swim for their lives toward the shoreline, with bamboo barriers on the race area to discourage cheating.

Some scream animal abuse and try to go against this practice, saying that swimming is not natural to pigs. However, organizers tell that pigs go though training before performing. They reiterate further that rewarding the pigs with food after a swim allows them to enjoy the experience.

Despite the rising number of complaints against the aquatic swine races, plans of making the races a regular weekend affair are slowly being developed.
