Katherine Heigl's Espionage Thriller "State of Affairs" Cancelled

NBC has given fans of tv show State of Affairs an unfortunate news after announcing that the show will not be coming back for its second season.

The drama centers on CIA analyst Charleston Tucker, portrayed by Katherine Heigl, who prepares the United States president's daily security briefing. The series was loosely based on real-life experiences of former CIA briefer, Rodney Faraon and boasted about having a big-name director, producer and writer such as Joe Carnahan as the show runner.

The show, which shares a similar theme to Fox's Homeland, was supposed to be Heigl's big comeback, who bitterly left the hit show Grey's Anatomy back in 2010 and went on to star in a series of lackluster romantic comedies.

Unfortunately for Heigl, things weren't meant to be, as State of Affairs got numerous negative reviews and garnered mediocre ratings despite being in a premium time slot, which follows The Voice. Though the show's pilot episode brought in an impressive 8.7 million viewers, the ratings tumbled rather quickly, with only about half tuning in to watch the latest episode of the series which aired on February 16.

Heigl's supposed comeback series was the second spy-themed show that got cut short by NBC, which invested a lot on the espionage genre this season.

Allegiance, which was the US adaptation of an Israeli original called "The Gordin Cell," premiered in February 5 this year and was immediately cancelled on March 5 after five low-rated episodes, which only averaged 3.8 million viewers. The series featured Hope Davis, Scott Cohen, and Margarita Levieva.

Other NBC shows that failed to make the cut are the sit-coms "About A Boy" led by David Walton and "One Big Happy" which starred Elisha Cuthbert and was executive produced by Ellen Degeneres. The DC Comics-based "Constantine" and "Marry Me" also got axed.
