Ginsburg is known as a skilled oral advocate whose work led to the end of gender discrimination in various areas of the law.

The script will be penned by Daniel Stiepleman. "On the Basis of Sex" follows the story of Ginsburg from her early years to entering law school, and her first big case on sexism.

Ginsberg, who was born in Brooklyn, New York City, spent a considerable time of her legal career promoting the advancement of women's rights in the law. In 1956, she was one of the nine women in a class of about 500 men at the Harvard Law School. In 1960, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter disapproved Ginsburg's application for a clerkship position due to her gender, despite being strongly recommended by the dean of Harvard Law School. This fueled her lifetime advocacy for women's rights.

In 1970, Ginsberg co-founded the first law journal in the country that focuses mainly on women's rights called the "Women's Rights Law Reporter." From 1972 until 1980, while in Columbia, Ginsberg co-authored the first law school casebook on sex discrimination. She also co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and argued a number of landmark cases that prompted the Supreme Court to create the Equal Protection Clause to women for the first time.

In 2009, Forbes placed Ginsburg on the list of 100 Most Powerful Women. At that time, she told New York Times in an interview that she supported abortion rights and said that the government has no business to make the choice for women. In 2015, Time Magazine named Ginsberg as an icon in the Time 100.

Natalie Portman, who recently received acclaim for Terence Malick's "Knight of Cups," and her directorial debut, "A Tale of Love and Darkness," is also Jewish and a supporter of women's rights.
