Russian Daredevils Brave China’s Tallest Skyscraper

Young thrill-seeking photographers Vadim Makhorov, 25, and Vitaly Raskalov, 21, from Ukraine and Russia, respectively, recently traveled to China to scale the world's second tallest building, the Shanghai Tower. The pair braved a 650-meter climb to take breathtaking photos of the tower and the city below.

Their YouTube video showed the duo, donning black hoodies and backpacks, take their climb on the 632-meter tower a step further by climbing an additional 18 meters up a crane. Immediately, the video became viral, with hundreds and thousands of viewers scrambling to get a sneak peek into how it feels to be on top of the world.

In his blog, daredevil Raskalov reported that they began their ascent on January 31, the first day of the Chinese New Year. "At the time the security was less watchful, workers were on vacation," Raskalov said. He further described their exhilarating climb, saying, "It took us almost two hours to get on the 120th floor by foot. And also, we (spent) almost 18 hours on top of the building, sleeping and waiting for better weather."

While still under construction, the Shanghai Tower promises to be quite a wonder, with its glass-and-steel exterior rising and twisting up into the sky. The building is also designed to withstand the city's strong winds.

American architecture firm Gensler called the Shanghai Tower a "super-highrise precinct" because the building plays host to a wide array of luxury hotels, offices, and rental units. The tower is a series of individual neighborhoods strewn over 142 vertical acres, which are equivalent to approximately 80 football pitches.

This great landmark crowning one of China's most populated cities is just one of the many structures in Makhorov and Raskalov's itinerary of adrenaline-pumping climbs. Other structures they have conquered include the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Cologne Cathedral.
