Apple is pulling all the stops to give back to the environment as it partners with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for a project that will help protect China's forests, the company announced on Monday.

The five-year partnership aims to protect 1 million acres of forestland and its species in the world's largest producer and consumer of paper products. This move shows that the tech giant is serious on lessening its environmental footprint and running its operations on 100 percent renewable energy.

"Forests, like energy, can be renewable resources," said Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of Environmental Initiatives, in a statement.

The company has faith that it can run on naturally renewable sources while protecting forests that produce the supplies they use in their product packaging.

"This is an important step toward that goal and our commitment to leave the world better than we found it," Jackson added.

Apple's US operations and data centers run on 100 percent renewable energy, while its global operations run on 87 percent renewable energy. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said that the company is spearheading the way in reducing carbon emissions from manufacturing. Cook admits that it will take years before they achieve their goals, but they are willing to take the responsibility to make it happen.

"This project is an unprecedented opportunity to drive responsible forestry in China and highlight an exciting new model of environmental leadership in addressing forest footprints," said Kerry Cesareo, Senior Director of Forest for WWF-US in a statement.

This project is Apple's second environmental initiative in China. In mid-April of 2015, the company partnered with various private entities from China's energy sector to launch its first major solar project in China.

To reduce Apple's ecological impact, the company installed solar panels in two 20-megawatt solar farms worth $850 million in Sichuan Province. The installation will generate 80 million kilowatt hours per year of clean energy.

It is only fitting that Apple is taking extra care of the China's environment as most of its products are made there. Furthermore, the company also helps the country by creating more than 3 million jobs for its 19 corporate offices and 22 retail stores.
