Android Releases Pre-Registration Option for Google Play Users

Google Play recently allowed users the option to pre-register for their favorite upcoming apps before they are released.

Android already gave developers the red light to set up this option for their future releases, with the first being Glu-Action's "Terminator Genisys: Revolution" game. Through this new option, developers could now post their apps as "Coming Soon," with an option for pre-registration, where consumers will be notified if the app is ready for download.

This latest feature can be found where the Buy/Install button would traditionally be found. Pre-registration, of course, is not a solid agreement to buy an app or game but is rather simply designed to notify users when an app becomes live and available for download. As of now, Google is not charging users for pre-registration, and anyone who did could un-register at any time.

"Terminator Genysis: Revolution" is a movie-tie-in game for a film of the same name set to be released in July 2015. The game is a third-person shooter set in the sci-fi future of the "Terminator" series universe. As with most movie-tie-in games, "Terminator Genysis: Revolution" will probably become live on its movie's release date.

This new Google Play feature is an excellent boon for both consumers and app publishers. On one hand, game studios can foresee how much demand their games are getting by observing the number of pre-orders. Pre-registration is also a great opportunity for developers of movie-tie-in games or sequels to hit games to boost up the hype and further improve their marketing efforts. Moreover, this change is viewed by many as a way to end the practice of publishing app listings with no compatible devices.

Meanwhile, consumers would not have to worry too much about missing out on the latest games and apps from their favorite developers.
