Goodbye 'CSI:' How Will The Showrunners End Longest-Running Crime Show

All good things come to an end, and for "CSI," the end might come sooner than later.

"CSI," one of the longest running crime shows on TV, is about to end their 15-year run. CBS is apparently interested in giving the long-running drama a much-needed rest via a two-hour TV movie, which is one of the scenarios being considered, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Other developments for the finale include a final season with 13 episodes, four finale episodes with a TV movie, or a limited run of six episodes for the final season, Digital Spy reported.

Meanwhile, one of their spinoffs, "CSI: Cyber" is getting a green light for their second season, according to TV by the Numbers. This spinoff is the newest out of the three that sprouted from the original, with the others being "CSI: Miami," which starred David Caruso as the sunglasses-wielding Lt. Horatio Caine, and "CSI: New York," with Gary Sinise as Det. Mac Taylor. "CSI: Cyber" stars Patricia Arquette as Dr. Avery Ryan, along with James Van Der Beek and Peter MacNicol, who solve cases spurning from the deep recesses of the Internet: the deep web or dark net. The new series received a season two order prior to airing its first season finale on May 13.

There are also rumors circulating that William Petersen, the original protagonist of the crime drama, is in talks to return for the finale. Though nothing is ever set in stone, it would be a great deal to the fans of the series to see Petersen back as Gil Grissom, if not the whole cast, for one final bow out.

Although CBS, the home network for "CSI," has already established other crime dramas in their roster, such as "NCIS" and "Criminal Minds," it would mean a big loss in the history of great TV for "CSI" to finally close shop.
