NASA Curiosity Rover Captures Mars’ Stunning Sunset

The Curiosity rover in Mars has taken spectacular images on the sunset in the red planet. Photographs show blue hues in the horizon. The rover, landed on Mars three years ago. Since then, it continues to send different images back to Earth.

The cool blue sunset is far different from the warm-hued in Earth. The thin atmosphere in Mars causes a blue effect because it is captured between dust and storms.

According to Dailytime report, NASA explained how the dusts create change in the scattering of light while it suspended high in the atmosphere. As observed by researchers, Mars has a thin layer of atmosphere and the surrounding dusts are distributed in vertical pattern.

Mark Lemmon of Texas A&M who is part of Curiosity science-team explained that the suspended fine dust in the Martian atmosphere is the right size for the blue light to infiltrates the atmosphere slightly more efficiently.

When the blue light spreads off the dust, it stick together towards the direction of the sun and it where the other color forms. The other portion of the sky remains yellow to orange, as yellow and red light spread all over the atmosphere instead of being absorbed or staying close to the sun.

This process happening in Mars horizon is opposite to what's happening on Earth where the sky turns red and yellow while the sun is setting in the horizon and the rest of the atmosphere project a blue-hue.

The camera used in capturing this significant photo in history is the Mastcam which is a high-resolution gadget that captured every detail from the Red Planet. The device also has the Bayer filter that has different series of color filters build in the camera itself. Each pixel is colored either blue, green or red and once the Mastcam's shutter opens, the light hits the lend and enters to each pixel like the way human eyes will see them, this is based on the article published in CNET News.

It might be one of the latest photo from Curiosity rover, but it is not the first photo taken from Mars.
