Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek is taking its business into a whole new level when it unveiled its newest deca-core processor.  The new processor codenamed Helio X20 has 10 processing cores divided in three CPU clusters.

The Helio X20 will be the successor of the Helio X10 octa-core processor which is at the heart of the One M9+ smartphone which is currently available in the Asian market only, according to Engadget. The report added that MediaTek is planning to market its newest processor within the third quarter of this year and industry experts estimate that smartphones running on the new processor will hit the market before the year ends.

MediaTek's X20 processor uses the Tri-Cluster CPU architecture. Two of its cores has a 2.5GHZ Cortex-A72 processor, four cores uses the 2GHz Coretex-A53 processor while the remaining four cores has the 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 processor.

Despite the added two cores, the Helio X20 is pretty much the same to its predecessor, the Helio X10. The only difference is the addition of two Cortex-A72 core and a slightly downgraded Cortex-A53 cores.

MediaTek general manager of international corporate sales Finbarr Moynihan explained that all 10 cores of the Helio X20 can run simultaneously. However, the processors software will always choose the best cluster that will handle different threads.

One example cited that apps that demand lower computing speeds can be handled by the low-powered cluster, multimedia apps and low resolution videos can be handled by the mid-cluster and computing-intensive applications like games and HD videos will be handled by the high-powered cluster.

Among the major upgrade present in the Helio X20 is the integration of the Cortex-M4 hub, a dual 12-bit processor for camera and a significant improvement in graphics performance while at the same time lowering power requirements, according to Extreme Tech.

During the presentation MediaTek general manager for Europe Siegmund Redl said, "Ten cores in three -instead of two- clusters will give computing performance that can be applied to running processes more granularly. We are now able to apply the industry's top performance for high-load tasks."
