World’s First Synthetic Leaf Can Generate Oxygen on Its Own

Humans have always been considering the idea of living in another planet. Earth is over populated and some people think that it is time to find another place to live in. But space exploration shows that it's impossible to search for a planet that can accommodate us and settle later on because of the absence of oxygen.

To address this concern, Julian Melchiorri who is a scientist and artist decided to study and invent an artificial leaf that mimics that actual process of photosynthesis on real leaves, according to Nature World News. This is the first recorded manmade leaf in the history of science that is successful enough in producing oxygen. We can think that anytime soon, staying in space will be much convenient.

The composition of this breathing leaf is a chloroplast which known to be responsible for photosynthesis process on plants. This chloroplast is suspended in a platform made from silk and protein that serves as its body.

Just like the normal leaves, this leaf is capable of absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) and it releases oxygen and other organic compounds. The presence of water and visible light is still important to complete the whole process. The leaf uses low energy and it weights lightly and totally ecofriendly. So far, it can be used in the living room to reduce the level of existing pollution around the place.

According to Melchiorri the materials might as well perfect for large scale project like outdoor application. Buildings or facades can now use a perfect ventilation system using this leaves. It serves as a biological filter and can help produce fresher air for human kind to breathe.

This new invention is very much promising for humanities. As the study progresses and testing is still being conducted, we should expect that its feature will improve more in the long run.
