Marvel Reveals Identity of New Wielder; Jane Foster is Now Part of the Film

Marvel wanting to get ahead of internet leaks, has finally unmasked the identity of the new wielder of Mjolnir through the New York Times, and she is none other than Jane Foster, a longstanding supporting character in the "Thor" comic book series. For those who want to see the unmasking themselves, they will have to wait for Marvel's "Thor #8", which will be hit the shelves on Wednesday.

Since October last year, readers have wondered who the woman behind the mask was. Theories have been rampant and some fans have pegged Angela, Thor's sister, as the new Thor. Jason Aaron, the series' writer, has something to say about the reveal and why he chose Foster to wield the hammer of the god.

"Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comics and the Thor mythology from almost the very beginning. The very act of picking up the hammer, of becoming Thor, is killing her. Where we go from here is the real story," Aaron stated in his New York Times interview.

Jane Foster, played by Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman in the film franchise, was a former girlfriend of Dr. Donald Blake, the alter-ego of the original Thor. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer in the recent releases.

With this big leap on Marvel's part, what could this spell out for the franchise's cinematic counterpart? Cinemablend has speculated that this might do nothing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his role as Thor in "Thor: Ragnarok" and in "The Avengers: Infinity War".

The events that take place in the Marvel comics happen in a different universe and timeline from its cinematic counterpart, and this might mean that Portman taking over Hemsworth's role as the God of Thunder might not be happening anytime soon.
