Mid North Coast Council Says Sea Level Rise Must Be Taken Seriously

Authors of the new study about sea level rise told Mid North Coast council to take the issue seriously, instead of focusing on the complaint about property values raised by different landholder. The rising of the sea level should be on top of the discussion, says the research team.

Study shows that the water level vastly change within a short period of time. The sea level is rising faster than the usually phenomenon. It is quite alarming because once it continues, many land areas, especially those below sea level, will be eradicated from map. Many islands will vanish and many resources will perish.

Since 1993, the sea level has been monitored and it shows that the water has risen faster in the last couple of years. This observation is in line with predictions given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The warmer environment causes the huge ice shelf in other regions to melt down and cause the water level to rise up. Humanity is facing unimaginable devastation once this happens.

According to John Church, who is a fellow from CSIRO and one of the authors of the research, the result shows findings on the implication for coastal planning. He added that while global warming continues to worsen, the impact of the increase in sea level continues to put everyone's life at risk.

He further pointed out that groups assigned to theCoastal Council and Coastal Planner need to do something before it becomes too too late for the 21st century to act on this concern. He warned them that if they will fail on imposing their goals and achieving their mission-sea level will increase by one meter at the end 'of the century. From that point, water will continue to rise much faster than what happening now.

Coffs Harbour's coastal landowners have been persuading the council to measure again the sea-level rise prediction because it impacts their property values to interested land buyer or investors.

New update posted on ABC, shows the Council using the plans provided by the IPCC on how to develop its Coastal Processes and Hazards Definitions Study.

For Dr. Church, environmental planning should not be hindered like thing related to personal benefits like property values.  He shows disappointment on seeing the short term action from the council because he wants to target a bigger impact and that can only be done when there is a careful planning for long-term goal. He added that the Council and coastal societies are all liable when the just ignore the sea level rise in the future.
