TV Chef Sandra Lee's Double Mastectomy Postponed

Food Network's Chef Sandra Lee announced on Twitter that her double mastectomy on Thursday will be postponed until next week.

On Wednesday, Lee took to Twitter to say her that doctors decided to delay her surgery due to an upper respiratory infection.

During Tuesday's show on "Good Morning America," Lee revealed to the public that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last March. She shared that she was in the middle of a photo shoot for People magazine when her doctor called with the findings of her lumpectomy. Her doctor said that the next step was a mastectomy.

When Lee's longtime boyfriend, New York Governor Andrew  Cuomo, first heard the news, he was reportedly devastated but he would be there for her all the way. He thinks that Lee seems too young and that she has no family history of the disease. He said that he is thankful though that her cancer was detected in its early stage.

Cuomo added that Lee had always been diligent about her check-ups. If she had been negligent and waited until she was 50, "this would be a very different situation," he said. The governor is amazed at Lee's strength since her diagnosis and says he continues to pray for her health. Lee said that Cuomo had been "extremely supportive" and plans to be present during her operation.

Governor Cuomo was the second person Lee called about the news. The first person she had called is her sister. "I think he was as stunned as I was," she said.

Today, Lee urges that every woman from the age of 20 take regular mammogram tests. It was these check-ups that had detected her cancer. She said that without early detection on her side, she could be "telling a very different story" and probably may not be around "to tell it all."

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a statement in support of Lee, saying that to face a diagnosis like this requires enormous courage. He added that it takes even more courage to share her story in the "hope of helping others."

Lee's fight against cancer is just one part of a life story that is filled with struggles and accomplishments. In her 2007 memoir, "Made From Scratch," Lee tells of a tough upbringing but managed to turn things around later. She stared her first product lines in her 20s, a window dressing kit called Kurtin Kraft. It was the beginning of a career in "in all things kitchen and home," including a line of cookbooks.
