Guitar Previously Owned By Beatles’ George Harrison Sells For $490,000

A two-day rock memorabilia auction concluded with Beatles' member George Harrison's famed guitar selling for $490,000. Host Julien's Auctions put up Harrison's Maton MS-500 Mastersound electric guitar up for bids Saturday at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square.

According to Julien's, Harrison borrowed the guitar in 1963 from Baratts music store in Manchester, England, for a few hours while his own set was under repair. Harrison ended up shredding with the very same axe on stage in several events in England and the Channel Islands that very summer.

As long-time fans would note, this period was when Beatlemania was first invading the hearts of avid listeners all around the world. Consequently, the fact that the guitar sold for nearly half a million dollars is not at all surprising.

Last year, Julien's Auctions sold another legendary Beatles guitar, this time used by both Harrison and John Lennon. As a CBS reporter noted, the guitar was used to record "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "This Boy," as well as an array of important British television shows before the prolific band hit American soil.

Other items sold at Julien's Auctions this year included a "penguin" suit reportedly worn by Elvis Presley himself in Las Vegas as far back as 1975. The suit sold for a whopping $122,000. This is not the only memorabilia from the King to be auctioned off though. Presley's wedding certificate when he married his wife Priscilla sold for $40,000. Moreover, the tour bus for his back-up bands also sold for $268,000.

More headline items include the black military-inspired jacket Michael Jackson wore when the Jackson 5 was inducted on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 ($83,750), as well as a popular vest worn by Jimi Hendrix ($59,000), and a tank top worn by Madonna herself ($25,000).
