General Motors has unveiled the highly anticipated 2016 Camaro at the Belle Isle Detroit, Mich, this past weekend. The sleek muscle car is the sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

It has been about 50 years since the first generation Chevrolet Camaro made its debut in the late sixties. Now, thanks to low fuel prices and a growing demand in the market for two-door sports cars, the Chevrolet Camaro is experiencing a rebirth.

According to GM Authority, buyers will be able to customize their 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in order to enjoy a more personalized experience. The Camaro's chief engineer Al Oppehheiser has explained that inputs from owners of older generation Camaro owners were taken into consideration during the development of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

Among other features, the 2016 Camaro will come with a 'Drive Mode Selector' that will allow drivers to tailor the performance of the car to fit their journey. Drivers will reportedly be given several modes to choose from, including Sport, Tour or Snow mode. Depending on the mode selected, various settings in the vehicle (i.e. the steering, throttle progression and stability control) will be adjusted.

According to Jalopnik, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will come with three engine options: a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine that generates up to 275 HP and 295 pound-feet of torque; a new 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces up to 335 HP and 284 pound-feet of torque; and the SS model, which features a 6.2-liter V8 engine and generates 455 HP and 455 pound-feet of torque.

To crown it all, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, which is up to 200 pounds lighter than its predecessors, will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

During a test ride of the 2016 Camaro in Belle Isle Park on Sunday, Jalopnik editor Patrick George made history after he became the first person to total a Chevrolet Camaro V6. George, who was driving a pre-production model of the 2016 Camaro, has admitted that he "made a mistake" that resulted in the accident. Although George and his cameraman escaped the crash unhurt, he revealed that the car suffered some damages. "The front left quarter panel slammed into a wall of tires, hard enough to make the car bounce off. The mirror got knocked off, the wheel got scraped up pretty badly and some of the bodywork was left digging into the tire," he wrote.
