NFL News & Rumors: Geno Smith Announced As New York Jets Starting Quarterback

The New York Jets have recently announced the decision to go with third year pro Geno Smith as their starting quarterback.

The surprising declaration was made by newly-appointed Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, according to Bleacher Report's Tyler Conway.

The Jets went through a massive re-tooling in the offseason, also hiring a new head coach and a new general manager in Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan respectively. Apparently, the new offensive coordinator does not see the need to have a new starting signal-caller.

"Right now, Geno's the starter," Gailey said. "That's the way it sits and that's the way we expect it to be unless something happens where you get an injury or something like that that you don't foresee."

NFL analysts thought that with the hiring of veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Smith would not be a shoo-in for the starting spot.

The announcement was a surprise because Bowles had always mentioned that "there would be a competition in training camp" and that Smith would not automatically be given the spot as he "has been maddeningly inconsistent in his first two seasons," as reported by the New York Post's Brian Costello.

But Gailey thinks otherwise.

"We saw a lot of talent on film. We saw a lot of promise on film. We saw a lot of things that made us think he could eventually be a pretty good quarterback," Gailey said. He then went on to say that having a quarterback competition to start the season would be hard and that it would be wiser to choose one then build the offense from there.

Smith was the Jets second round pick in 2013, and would have talented wide receivers Brandon Marshall, Devin Smith, Erick Decker, and Jace Amaro as the primary beneficiaries of his passes this coming season, writes International Business Times' Justin Gloria.
