Melissa McCarthy Soars High With 'Spy'

Newest comedy queen Melissa McCarthy is quickly reaping the rewards of her hard work as her latest project "Spy" soars in the overseas market.

The Paul Feig-helmed movie first rolled out in foreign markets this weekend, opening at number one in the South Korean market with $4.6 million and raking in $3.6 million in Australia. Both Korean and Australian numbers add up to a total of $12.5 million from the international market alone, reported The Wrap.

The action comedy movie tells the story of a CIA agent who volunteers to go deep undercover after two of their best agents have been compromised. Alongside McCarthy are Jude Law, Jason Statham, and Rose Byrne.

Paul Feig has previously worked with McCarthy in "Bridesmaids," and according to Entertainment Weekly, the "Spy" director immediately knew that he found someone unique in McCarthy the moment she auditioned for the 2011 all-women comedy. In fact, this movie is their third together, with the two partnering last 2013 for "The Heat."

McCarthy was not the first choice for the role in "Spy," since the director knew the actress already has her hands full with her TV series "Mike & Molly," but after having dinner together, she insisted.

The actress has been recently making rounds about how she shut down a reporter with a sexist question during an interview. Yahoo Movies reported that the actress revealed during an interview in "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" how an interviewer asked her why she allowed herself to look ugly in the movie "Tammy," which was directed by her husband. She responded by asking if a guy played a downtrodden man, would he be asked the same questions, and then took the conversation to a lighter level by talking about his kids, to which he was very proud of.

Sure enough, fans will roll off their seats when "Spy" hits theaters June 5.
